Do you find spirituality while doing yard work?

When I get into the yard and rake, an mow, and edge, and saw, and trim, and plant, and sweep, and ALL that kind of stuff, I feel a sense of being part of the universe. A real sense that I belong right here. Any answers are appreciated.

Oh, yes.

The planting and pruning are very symbolic to me.

Here’s a poem I wrote a year or so ago:

“Deadwood”

Sitting on the ground

In my back yard,

The dampness works its way through my shorts.

I have in my hands

Various weapons of torture:

The shears

The trimmers

The pruners

Sharp edges meant to snip and sever.

I whisper apologies to each plant as I cut,

Trimming out the dead branches

Finding the strongest buds to nurture;

So my boxwoods,

My forsythia,

My lilacs,

Will flourish and bloom.

And as I love a good symbol,

I think of my own life:

The pruning that has been necessary,

The ideas cast away,

The relationships that hurt me…

The places left behind

So that I could grow —

And put forth beautiful flowers

Uniquely my own

.
